Newtown Township in Queens County, NY stretched from the East River to the Flushing River. The neighborhoods it covered include today's Corona, Elmhurst, East Elmhurst, Forest Hills, Glendale, Jackson Heights, Maspeth, Middle Village, Ridgewood, Rego Park, and Woodside. In 1870 Long Island City was formed, splitting off from the town of Newtown. In 1906, at the behest of a developer, a portion of Newtown was renamed Elmhurst.
