The initial Cuban residents arrived in Jackson Heights in the 1950's, escaping Fulgencio Batista's tyranny. "The 1950's saw the establishment of several Cuban businesses along 82nd Street...but by the turn of the 21st century, most of those businesses had closed and the Cubans moved to the suburbs."
In the early 1960's a second group of Cubans arrived fleeing Castro's Communist regime.
