On January 4, 2019 Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (commonly referred to as AOC) took the seat in U.S. House of Representatives reserved for New York's 14th congressional district, having defeated the incumbent, Joe Crowley.

Why this page?

A January 22, 2019 New York Times story about AOC reported on a query she'd sent to her 1,900,000 Instagram followers [1]

“Would you rather have a Congress member with an amazing local services office, or one that leads nationally on issues?” she (AOC} queried her 1.9 million followers on Instagram — a number that is well over twice the population of her district. The results strongly favored national issues.[2]

Considering her meteoric rise to prominence based largely on national issues, the tweet raised some questions:

  • How many of those responding to the post were from the 14th Congressional District?
  • How many of those responding were from Jackson Heights?
  • For those who choose to judge her performance by her impact on neighborhood, local, national, or global issues, how are they to identify relevant ones?

With's focus on the neighborhood, it behooves (yes, reviving behooves) us to make note of relevant initiatives, hence this page.

Neighborhood Initiatives[edit]

These will include local developments influenced by Federal law or budget. And those matters that are clearly local where she expresses an opinion.

In November 2018 AOC and Amazon cemented a place in Jackson Heights' discussion space when she was elected and Amazon announced its "second headquarters" would be built in Long Island City. AOC expressed opposition.
