Welcome to the Jackson Heights Wiki
Where the neighborhood's past is shared and future imagined
The Jackson Heights Wiki is a toddler, sprung to life in March 2017. While the wiki emerged from the neighborhood, and its creators have dozens of years familiarity with the "atomic" neighborhood, fitting its bricks and mortar into a digital format requires a good deal of thought. These six pages are in need of special focus. Add your thoughts.
Help raise awareness about our neighborhood by sharing information about its history, culture, events, organizations, people, places, etc. Create an information base that will serve the civic, economic, and social needs of neighborhood residents and organizations. Add a little or a lot. Make a difference!
The Jackson Heights Wiki is a Wikipedia-like collaboration focused on Jackson Heights. It is part of the JacksonHeights.nyc Initiative, a broad effort to meet the information, communication, decision-making and organizing needs of the neighborhood in an era driven by digital technology.
The following are the first pages that were added to the wiki. Some are "stubs," help improve them.

Editing & Edit-a-thons
Adding pages to the Jackson Heights Wiki is easy, but editing them can be tricky. We use the same software used by Wikipedia, so if you're an experienced "Wikipedian" (a Wikipedia editor), there's a zero learning curve. For the inexperienced we're arranging an edit-a-thon (training sessions). These can be arranged for groups or individuals. Email email@example.com to indicate your interest.
This wiki is part of the JacksonHeights.nyc Initiative. Its goal is to help residents use the Internet to improve the quality of life in the Jackson Heights neighborhood.
Developing a neighborhood domain is pioneering work, with finding an effective governance process - deciding who has decision making authority and how it is implemented - a key factor in determining success. A neighborly collaboration is needed to smooth the inevitable conflicts that will arise over the wiki's content and operation. See the Governance process page to learn how you can participate.
The NYS nonprofit Connecting.nyc Inc. was granted the city license to develop the JacksonHeights.nyc domain. Its 3-year mission is help residents plan and develop the domain and transition control of the Initiative to an independent, locally controlled nonprofit by 2020.
